U10s Match Reports 18th February 2012

Stalybridge Celtic Blues 1v 1 Hough End Griffins ............By Alun Ireland....

A battling performance from the Blues saw them pick up a point against a physical Hough End side.

The boys were unlucky not to take all three points, only conceding late in the game after having had chances to put the game beyond the Griffins.

The Blues started well, and the best move of the half – a Deacon kick to Connor, who played William in perfectly to score – resulted in the opening goal. Deacon had to be alert to save with his feet, and even though some sloppy throw ins put the Blues under pressure, James was always on hand to clear the danger.

The second half followed the same pattern as the first – Griffins aiming to put on pressure, the Blues looking dangerous on the break. A mazy run from William nearly got a goal, but he shot wide, and Connor almost scored from a James cross.

Deacon had to be brave diving at the feet of the Griffins striker, but Daniel S nearly doubled the lead but his shot just went over.

The Hough End goal came from poor defending for a corner again – the smallest player on the pitch heading home unmarked.

The draw was a fair result, with the game played in awful conditions. Man of the match was William, but James – who seems to be getting better every week – must have run him close with a faultless display at the back.

Stalybridge Celtic Whites 3 v 3 Hough End Griffins

A first half hat-trick from Tyler should have put the game beyond doubt, but the Griffins fought back to win a point.

In driving rain and gusty wind, the Whites still managed to pass their way through the Griffins midfield and were soon on top. And it was against the run of play when a speculative cross somehow missed everybody and landed in the far corner of the Stalybridge net.

But the goal did not unsettle the Whites. A solo run from yler brought the teams level almost straight away, and Robson twice went close.

A run and pass from Jack C played Tyler in for his second, before he brought up his hat trick after a Jack C shot came back off the post.

In the second half, conditions got worse, and the Whites conceded two sloppy goals to allow Hough End back on level terms.

Robson was again unlucky to have his shot saved after a great run, but neither team could force a winner.

Tyler was man of the match for a great hat-trick, but conditions never allowed the Whites to show their best.
