Hough End 4 v 5 Stalybridge Celtic............By Rob Dolan................
The boys again met tough opposition in Hough End in this Cup game where the scores from both games are added together with the team having the highest aggregate score progressing through to the next round. The Blues played first and started brightly with good shots from Callum and Robson. At the other end Owen and Jack I were doing some great defensive work to keep Hough End at bay. It was pleasing to see some good passing as the boys put what they had been learning at training in to practise. Archie, Niall and Robson had been combining well and eventually a ball came in from the left which Callum swiftly placed in to the back of the net. James was working hard down the left wing, he set up Niall with a shot that went just wide and then took a great corner which Robson leaped to meet but unfortunately, it just missed the target. The second half started well, Robson ran down the wing and shot wide then Archie passed to James who put in another great cross. Hough End then broke and against the run of play, they slotted the ball home to make it 1-1. The Blues continued to create chances, Callum shot just wide and then Robson placed a free kick in the area and Owen attacked it well but just couldn’t connect. With a few minutes to go the Griffins scored again to make it 2-1 and Niall did some great defensive work to prevent them from extending the lead.M.O.M Jack Ireland the rock at the back..
The Whites went in to the game knowing that they needed to win by one clear goal to force penalties or by two clear goals to win the tie outright. In the first few minutes, Deacon came out well to deny Hough End. At the other end, Adam worked hard to earn a free kick which Oscar placed in to the danger area, Joe jumped well but headed just wide. Hough End struggled to contain Jack who was doing some great work down the left hand side, he linked up with Adam and Oscar and was very unlucky when his shot hit the post. Dan S and Tyler also combined well and Tyler had two efforts saved by the keeper. The deadlock was finally broken when Joe smashed a long range effort in to the net. At half time, the Whites were 1-0 up and 2-2 on aggregate. The second half saw a flurry of goals. Adam and Tyler passed well, Tyler earned a free kick which Oscar took, the keeper attempted to make a save but the shot was too powerful (2-0). All seemed well and then with 10 minutes to go, Hough End scored to make it 2-1. Oscar then passed to Dan S who set up Dec for a close range shot which he buried in to the net to make it 3-1. The Whites then conceded another to make it 3-2 and it looked like it was going to penalties. The Team continued to apply pressure, Dec and Joe were both unlucky not to score. Then with minutes to go, Dec and Oscar took a short corner, the ball fell to Brandon and he scored a great goal to make it 4-2 and 5-4 on aggregate. A great team effort from both the Blues and the Whites and a well deserved victory. M.O.M Jack Clegg, Gave 110% effort and never stopped the whole game..
