Stalybridge Celtic Blues 2 v 2 Whitworth Park ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,By Alun Ireland......................
The Blues used a huge slice of their luck for the season to escape with a draw against an attacking Whitworth Park team.
The boys were second best in every department, forgetting their last
training sessions based on closing down space and passing and moving.
They quickly went two goals down in the first half as they allowed Whitworth Park to win every ball and then failed to cover in defence.
There was nothing Deacon could have done with either goal as both shots
were cleanly hit from the edge of the box and fired high into the net.
Two-nil flattered the Blues at half time, it could – and should – have been many more, only Deacon in goal and a brilliant goal line clearance from Adam saving their embarrassment.
In the second half, Stalybridge at least fought back and showed spirit, creating a few chances but still often allowing two or three opposition players to run through on their own goal unchallenged.
Without ever putting a passing move together, the boys started to look better going forward – Adam working hard to find space, and Conor and William starting to run with the ball.
Owen got a goal back with a brilliant run and finish, and then the Blues were lucky to snatch an equaliser when the ball looked to have

gone out of play. However they played to the whistle, William cutting
the ball back for Conor to hit home for their luckiest point of the season.
Without Thomas pulling off some fine saves and some disappointing Whitworth finishing, this would have been a heavy defeat.
Man of the match was Adam for never giving up, although Thomas must also have been close.
