After a fortnight without a game, Celtic U9s showed no ill effects as they produced two top performances to twice defeat Stockport Junior Blues 3-1 on Saturday morning at Wright Robinson School.
The 'B' team welcomed back Rhylee in defence following his enforced absence due to an operation, allowing Nathan to play on the left side of midfield. And it was his shot that led to Celtic taking the lead, although Callum knew little about it, as it cannoned off the post, the keeper and then his behind before finding the back of the net! It was finally that bit of luck that has undoubtedly been missing in front of goal in recent weeks and was the springboard to a fine display. The lead was soon doubled when a corner from Josh took a flick off a defender while under pressure from Bomber and Rhylee was on hand to head in. The famous or infamous 'Rhylee Roll' back on show as the defender ran 40 yards to celebrate.
A bit of indecision in defence allowed Stockport to get back in the game, but their threat was mainly down to long throws and long balls, which the lads dealt with very well. In the second half, both Thomas and Callum were denied by fine saves as their shots looked destined for the net, but another effort from Eliott was only parried by the keeper and Bomber was on hand to score a third and seal the game.
It was a tremendous performance, combining hard work and no little skill, resulting in a deserved two points. Nathan was named man of the match for a super display.
FINAL SCORE: CELTIC 3 STOCKPORT JUNIOR BLUES 1
The 'A's almost led inside the first minute but were behind within three, when poor marking from a corner allowed Stockport to head home the opener. However, Celtic soon took control of the game, drawing level a couple of minutes later when Kai found Dan, who in turn played in Max. His first effort was blocked but he made no mistake with the follow-up claiming his 18th of the season.Three minutes later Stalybridge were in front when Jack struck a superb left foot shot that went in off the bar. Again, long balls and throws were the main danger from Stockport, but Luke in goal was in top form producing several fine saves in both halves.
After the break Celtic created chance after chance but couldn't find the killer touch, Keenan going so close on a couple of occassions. But when Kai stole in at the back post, timing his run perfectly to head home a corner from Brad, the points were secure. Just like the 'B' team before them, Celtic played some lovely football and thoroughly deserved the win against a big strong side.
Kai was named man of the match for a composed display in defence, although Luke certainly ran him close with a fine performance between the sticks.
FINAL SCORE: CELTIC 3 STOCKPORT JUNIOR BLUES 1
